• Advanced Practice Providers

Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are nationally certified and state licensed to provide diagnoses, treatments and follow-up. There is a strong representation of APPs across UK HealthCare, working in collaborative roles with physicians in all specialties of acute-care and clinical settings. The daily contributions by APPs to deliver “patient first,” high-quality health care is valued by physicians as well as by patients and their families.

UK HealthCare’s Office for Advanced Practice serves as the professional home for nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists, nurse midwives and physician assistants.

  • Office of Advanced Practice Student Placement Request Process

Download the Student Placement Request Process (PDF, 287 KB)

Any APP student seeking placement for clinical hours at UK Healthcare must submit a request to the UKHC APP Office using the Student Placement Request form. Please be sure that you include the dates of your requested rotation, the number of hours you are seeking, and the college/university in which you are currently enrolled. If you already have a preceptor, please include that information on the form as well.

    Important Points to Consider

    • We do need specific dates (please do not use Fall 2016). If you don’t have specific days, please use a month-to-month reference (August-December 2016).
    • If you already have a preceptor, we do need the preceptor listed that has looked at the curriculum requirements of your program and has agreed that the program requirements and hour requirements can be achieved. We cannot accept a department as a preceptor.
    • We will need an email confirmation from your preceptor stating they have agreed to take you as a student for the term listed on the request.
    • Approvals are granted for a specific time period only. If you have an additional need for clinical hours outside the time frame you submitted, you must complete a new request.
    • These guidelines are for students not currently enrolled in the UK College of Nursing or UK College of Health Sciences Physician Assistant Program. If you are a current UK CON or UK CHS PA student seeking placement, please contact your student advisor for placement guidelines.
    • We make a diligent attempt to place all APP students who have requested placement at UK Healthcare. However, due to the high volume of requests and limited preceptor availability, we cannot guarantee a placement to any student. You will be notified via email once approval is received. You will also be notified via email if a placement is not available at this time

Once you have received email confirmation of placement approval from the APP Office, you must contact the Office of Observation and Learning Experience to complete the second step of the placement process.

Office of Observation and Learning Experience Requirements

You must complete the required paperwork from the Office of Observation and Learning Experience (OLE) before you can begin any clinical hours. You may contact them directly at OLEstudents@uky.edu. All forms from the OLE office must be completed and turned in at least two weeks prior to your expected start date. You cannot begin any clinical hours until you have an ID badge, and you must display the student placard with the badge at all times while obtaining clinical hours.

    Recommended Deadlines

Spring Clinical (January-May): Requests must be received by December 1.
Summer Clinical (June-July): Requests must be received by April 1.
Fall Clinical (August-December): Requests must be received by July 1.
