What is gastroenterology?
Since its foundation nearly 40 years ago, the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition has distinguished itself as a highly ranked specialty within the Department of Internal Medicine. It provides state-of-the-art medical care to patients with gastrointestinal diseases, liver diseases and nutritional problems in a multidisciplinary environment.
The Digestive Health Program specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of adults and adolescents with acute and chronic diseases affecting the digestive system. A collaborative team of gastroenterologists and surgeons provides the most advanced treatments to patients.
The gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) clinic specializes in the treatment of GERD, a chronic (long-term) digestive disorder caused by gastric acid flowing from the stomach into the esophagus. Our clinic offers both a gastroenterologist and a surgeon so patients can see both physicians in one visit.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program
This program specializes in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, two chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. A local support group has also been formed to assist patients with these diseases.
The Endoscopy Center is a 7,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility that provides an environment for advanced endoscopy and training. More than 9,000 endoscopic procedures are performed annually at both UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital, UK Good Samaritan Hospital and the Veterans Affairs Hospital. A variety of routine procedures are performed through colonoscopy, and upper endoscopy. Advanced endoscopic procedures include endoscopic ultrasound, laser therapy, esophageal and rectal manometry and other advanced treatments for GI-related diseases.
The hepatology expertise of UK HealthCare's gastroenterology physicians is supported by the university's liver transplant program. In 2008, UK Chandler Hospital performed its 400th liver transplant. Specialized procedures related to hepatology including therapeutic biliary endoscopy and laparoscopy are also offered.
The pediatric gastroenterologists offer assessment and treatment for pediatric patients with gastrointestinal and liver disease. Diagnostic services include consultation and follow-up evaluation using state-of-the-art diagnostic and procedural services.
The nutrition support team is directed jointly by surgery and gastroenterology at UK Chandler Hospital and by gastroenterology at the VA Hospital. Daily rounds are made with a nurse, nutritionist and pharmacist who are dedicated to the team.
As part of an academic medical center, research plays an important role for the Digestive Health Program. We strive to offer our patients new and advanced options for care. To find out about research studies currently offered, visit the
