In the last 30 years, the incidence of overweight children has doubled and it is now estimated that one in five children in the US is overweight. Most troubling, are the increases being seen in younger children, including preschoolers.
The Pediatric BMI (Body Mass Index) Clinic, will serve children and adolescents, age 2 to 18, who are overweight/obese (i.e. with BMI's above the 85th percentile). Patients must be referred by their primary care physician.
The clinic provides an extensive initial evaluation including a comprehensive physical exam, a detailed family, dietary, and activity history, as well as screening for co-morbidities associated with obesity.
Clinic staff will coordinate arrangements for subspecialty clinic services as needed and communicate with the referring primary care physician. Since we are not a weight management clinic, we collaborate closely with public health departments in Kentucky to identify and refer all patients and their families to local resources for lifestyle modification interventions, especially those related to nutrition and physical activity.
Adolescent Medicine Obesity Clinic also provides body mass index evaluations for adolescents who are overweight or obese.
