The new Eastern State Hospital opened in September 2013, providing recovery-focused, individualized care in a supportive environment that features the latest in mental health treatment. The original Eastern State Hospital opened in 1824 and cared for individuals for 189 years, making it the second-oldest psychiatric hospital in the country until the opening of the new Eastern State Hospital. Building on that legacy, the new 300,000-square-foot, 239-bed facility provides an extensive range of inpatient mental health services, both acute and long-term, to adults living within the 50 counties surrounding and including Fayette County. Prior to the opening of the facility on UK's Coldstream Research Campus, UK HealthCare and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) embarked on an innovative partnership under which UK operates and manages Eastern State Hospital.
